The finding
A 2026 mapping project reviewed more than 560 institutions and identified over 350 undergraduate AI majors, minors, concentrations and certificates in the United States. arXiv: Mapping AI Programs in the U.S.: A Status Report from Early 2026.
Researchers identified more than 350 AI programs, but course requirements vary enough that the same label can describe very different degrees. arXiv: Mapping AI Programs in the U.S.: A Status Report from Early 2026.
What the evidence actually shows
The researchers examined requirements for 66 majors and 87 minors. Every major without a general AI course required machine learning, but ethics appeared in only a little more than one-third of majors and fewer than one-quarter of minors. The label therefore signals market demand more reliably than it signals a standard curriculum. arXiv: Mapping AI Programs in the U.S.: A Status Report from Early 2026. The decision hidden inside the headline
For applicants, the investigative question is not whether a college offers AI; it is who teaches it, which prerequisites are mandatory, how much mathematics and computer science sit underneath the title, and whether students can combine it with another field. Fast program growth also creates admissions effects as institutions market capacity before outcomes data exist. arXiv: Mapping AI Programs in the U.S.: A Status Report from Early 2026. What the record cannot yet prove
Program inventories change quickly, and a published curriculum cannot by itself establish teaching quality, placement results or future capacity. Some interdisciplinary AI study may exist without using AI in the formal program title. AI Program Map: CICMap undergraduate AI program database.
What applicants should do now
Compare required courses line by line, including calculus, statistics, programming, machine learning, ethics and capstone work. Ask whether the program has dedicated faculty and seats or mainly repackages existing courses. arXiv: Mapping AI Programs in the U.S.: A Status Report from Early 2026.
Preserve the exact cycle, program and applicant category in any checklist. When a secondary report and a controlling admissions page differ, the current first-party instruction governs the application. arXiv: Mapping AI Programs in the U.S.: A Status Report from Early 2026.

Documents, reporting and comparative context
Source key: Tier 1 is a direct document, official publication or first-party source. Tier 2 is independent reporting or analysis. Tier 3 may identify a lead but cannot establish a factual claim on its own. Comparative-context sources clarify terminology or provide a parallel case; they do not prove the central finding.
